LAKEWOOD, CO- CCU closed their series with Adams State on Sunday at All Star Park. Led by a massive day from
Major Maydon and five total home runs from the team, the Cougars held on for a 12-11 victory to take the series over the Grizzlies three games to one.
From the start CCU was seeing the ball well at the plate and putting the ball into play.
Mason Hagel-Pitt singled in a first inning run, and Maydon began his monster day with an RBI double to right field.
Nathan Mensen followed with an RBI double of his own as the Cougars led 3-0 after one.
Tanner Rae came home in the second on a wild pitch, and Maydon blasted the first of two home runs he would hit in the third. The long ball was a two-run down the left field line that hit the foul pole to make it 6-0.
Gregory Rangel scored one more in the third to make it 7-0.
The fourth inning was a special one for the Cougars as they did something rarely seen in the sport of baseball.
William Brassil started the scoring as he crushed a pitch deep to right field for a solo homer. Maydon then stepped into the box and on the first pitch he saw he lifted his second homer of the day, a no doubter to right field. Rangel came next, and he took his first pitch and blasted a solo shot to right field as the trio of left handed hitters hit three pitches in a row over the fence. With a dominant 10-0 lead,
Lukas Hinze got in on the fun with a solo homer to left center in the fifth as CCU surged ahead 11-0.
The Grizzlies plated a pair of runs in the sixth, but a
Seth Gustafson RBI single made it 12-2 after six innings of play. The Grizzlies proceeded to mount a furious rally in the seventh, scoring nine runs to close the gap to just one run at 12-11.
With CCU needing outs badly, they turned to freshman
Austin DeMello for the final two innings. The native of Camarillo, California came through when his team needed him most, getting out of a bases-loaded jam in the eighth and retiring three straight batters in the ninth to pick up the save in the thrilling 12-11 victory.
Chad Naf secured the victory with 5.2 innings of work on the mound with just two runs allowed. DeMello notched save number two on the season with his heroics in the final two innings. Maydon had a game to remember, going 4-5 at the plate with two doubles, two homers and four RBI to lead his team to the victory.
Colorado Christian will now head to RMAC-leading Colorado Mesa with momentum as they begin their series in Grand Junction March 21 with a night game set to begin at 6:05 p.m. MST.
