LAKEWOOD, CO- Colorado Christian continued RMAC play on Friday with a doubleheader at All Star Park against Chadron State on Friday. Both contests were low scoring affairs, but in the end Cougars showed why they are the top team in the conference with a pair of gritty 5-1 and 1-0 victories.
GAME ONE
It was a low scoring day for both teams as the pitching proved to be a strong point all day long.
Elyse McMullin and the Eagles' Tori Haug battled it out in the circle. The two worked scoreless innings for the first four innings of competition before CCU managed to break through.
After a leadoff single in the bottom of the fifth for the Cougars, two quick outs appeared to snuff the momentum. They were not to be denied though, as
Lauren Garcia singled to plate
Peyton Marvel and McMullin brought home Garcia with a single of her own.
Leah Garcia singled next, and
Rachel Williams brought home McMullin with a base knock.
Danae Lopez dealt the final blow with a two-run single to make it 5-0. A run from Chadron State in the sixth would not be enough to overcome the lead built in the fifth as CCU claimed a 5-1 series opening victory.
McMullin improved to 9-3 on the season with the victory in the circle, going six innings with seven strikeouts while scattering three hits and one run allowed.
Hanna Espinoza closed out the final inning to seal the victory. Lopez led the offense with her two RBI base hit.
GAME TWO
The second game of the day was even more of a pitchers duel as neither team could find their rhythm offensively. Much like the first game of the series, neither team could plate a run for the first four innings as
Emma Duncan faced off with Kenzi Garner in the circle.
CCU scratched out the lone run of the game in the bottom of the fifth as
Lauren Garcia singled and McMullin followed with a bunt single.
Leah Garcia then reached and advanced to second as Lauren was forced out at third but the throw to first from third sailed high and put runners at second and third with one out. Williams came next as she lifted a ball to centerfield to pickup a sacrifice fly and make it 1-0.
A quick 1,2,3 sixth inning sent the game to the seventh, and Espinoza worked her way out of a jam with runners at first and third with one out as she struck a batter out and
Camryn Quilling made a nice play in centerfield to record the final out on the 1-0 win.
Duncan nabbed win number nine on the season, striking out six with no runs allowed. Espinoza tallied save number four on the season with a clutch seventh inning to seal the victory. Williams notched the only RBI of the game with her sac fly in the fifth.
The Cougars close their series with Chadron State March 22 with a doubleheader at All Star Park at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. MST.
