Stellar Pitching and Clutch Hitting Leads to Walkoff Victory Over Orediggers

LAKEWOOD, CO- After a good battle in game one of their series with Mines, game two was shaping up to be another good contest on Saturday afternoon. The game lived up to the billing as a back and forth affair ended with a walkoff single from William Brassil in the bottom of the ninth for the thrilling 6-5 victory.

The Orediggers jumped ahead with a run in the first for a 1-0 advantage, but a passed ball in the bottom half of the inning allowed Lukas Hinze to race home to tie the game. Brassil singled home a run in the third as CCU took their first lead of the game at 2-1. A solo shot in the fifth from Mines made it 2-2 as the game came down to the wire.

In the bottom of the fifth, Major Maydon crushed a no-doubter to right field for a two-run homer as the Cougars retook the lead 4-2. A run in the sixth from Mines was answered by an RBI single from Gavin Acosta as the two run lead was restored at 5-3. The visitors plated two in the seventh as the game went into the eighth tied at 5-5. After a scoreless eighth and ninth from the Orediggers, CCU headed to the bottom of the ninth with a chance for the win.

After a quick out, Hinze drew a walk to become the winning run on base. Mason Hagel-Pitt followed with a single, sending Hinze to third as he advanced to second on the throw. With Maydon due up, Mines chose to intentionally walk the senior to load the bases and open up a potential double play opportunity. The move did not pay off as Brassil stepped into the box and sent his team home winners with a hard hit single past the first baseman down the right field line as CCU rushed the field to celebrate the 6-5 walkoff victory.

Jack Cazin put in seven innings of excellent work on the mound, striking out four and scattering eight hits as he only allowed three earned runs and did not issue a single walk. Austin DeMello picked up the first win of his collegiate career as he closed the final two innings out with just one hit allowed and no runs to seal the victory. A 3-4 day from Hagel-Pitt, and a two RBI day from Maydon and Brassil paced the offense in the exhilarating walkoff win.

Colorado Christian will close the home slate of their season and celebrate their nine seniors on April 27 with a doubleheader at 12 and 3 p.m. MST.
