LAKEWOOD, CO- The Cougars celebrated their seven seniors on Saturday as they hoped to clinch the RMAC Regular Season Crown with a doubleheader sweep of CSU Pueblo. The hosts took care of business, shutting out the Thunderwolves on the day with wins of 4-0 and 6-0 to secure hosting rights for the upcoming RMAC tournament.
GAME ONE
CCU started off game one with a run in the second as
Cheyenne Stark doubled home
Mia Stankiewicz for the 1-0 lead.
Sarah Dollerschell tacked on two more runs as she doubled home a pair in the fourth to make it 3-0. CSU Pueblo continued to struggle offensively as the Cougars shut them down. A fourth run in the sixth closed out the 4-0 victory.
Emma Duncan flirted with a no-hitter for the second straight day, giving up just two hits and no runs with four strikeouts in a complete game shutout. Dollerschell and Stark provided the offense needed in the shutout victory.
GAME TWO
Knowing they needed one more win to clinch hosting rights for the RMAC Tournament, CCU came out strong in inning one as
Danae Lopez picked up a sac fly to plate
Elyse McMullin and make it 1-0. From there a pitching duel ensued as neither team managed to score until the sixth inning.
The sixth was a big one for the Cougars as they tacked on a plethora of hits, and a crafty double steal saw
Peyton Marvel steal home for a 2-0 lead.
Rachel Williams singled and McMullin scored, and Lopez broke things wide open with a two-run homer that was crushed to left field.
Camryn Quilling came next and destroyed a softball over the left field fence as back-to-back homers made it 6-0.
Carson Griggs entered in for the final out and quickly induced a groundout to seal the 6-0 victory.
McMullin was excellent in the circle as she threw a complete game one-hitter to lead her team to the victory with six strikeouts as she faced just two more batters than the minimum of 21. Lopez again paced the offense with three RBI in the massive win.
The RMAC Tournament will take place at All Star Park in Lakewood as the Cougars clinched their second regular season title in the last three years. The tournament will be April 30-May 3 and CCU will play first on April 30 at 4 p.m. MST against the winner of the CSU Pueblo vs. UCCS game earlier in the day.
