SAN MARCOS, CA- Following a monumental win over #2 Angelo State in their home opener on Tuesday, the Cougars made a quick turnaround and headed to California to take on Cal State San Marcos on Thursday. CCU kept their momentum going, using a highly effective attack to roll their way to a sweep of the Cougars from California.
Sierra Crist and
Suzanna Conner got the attack going early in set one with kills, and a
Connelly Kilgore kill saw the team go up 13-9. An ace from
Savannah Majeski saw CCU go on top 20-14, and Kilgore and Crist ended the set with kills for a 25-20 victory.
The Cougars got off to an early run in the second set to take an 8-3 lead as
Renee Phillips slammed one home and Majeski notched back-to-back aces. CSUSM rallied closer for a brief moment, but Majeski continued to serve with a hot hand for two straight aces once again. Leading 21-16,
Suzanna Conner caught fire and put down three straight kills, and Janelle DeBoer ended the 25-17 set victory with a kill out of the middle.
Kilgore got off to a hot start in the third set as CCU went for the sweep, putting down several kills as the visitors jumped ahead 9-6. The serving was a strong point all night for the Cougars, and
Krista Traynor displayed that with consecutive aces to make it 13-7. Kills from Conner and Crist made it 18-12, and a block from Kilgore and DeBoer sent the advantage to 23-14. Conner dealt the final blow, sending her team to a sweep for the second straight match with a game-ending kill in a 25-18 set victory.
The offense was humming all night as they notched an attacking percentage of .363. Kilgore led the attack with 14 kills, while Conner and Phillips had 11 and 8 kills respectively. Majeski had a team high 5 aces, and Traynor dished out 37 assists.
Kristina House held down the defense with 11 digs.
The Cougars improved to 3-3 with the victory and will now prepare for a matchup with Purdue University Northwest on September 12 at 1 p.m. MST.
