Cougars Sweep CSUSM to Close California Roadtrip 3-0

SAN MARCOS, CA- The Cougars closed their trip to California with their second matchup with Cal State San Marcos in three days on Saturday. CCU continued to play excellent volleyball, sweeping the hosts for the second time to make it four straight wins as they head into RMAC play.

The first set was a dominant effort from the Cougars as they took an early lead and never looked back. Renee Phillips and Janelle DeBoer put down early kills and Krista Traynor notched a kill as well for a 9-4 advantage. A pair of kills from Sierra Crist saw the lead grow to 18-10, and consecutive kills from Connelly Kilgore made it set point at 24-14. Suzanna Conner sealed the deal with a kill for the 25-15 victory.

Conner and Kilgore started set two with a kill and ace, and Conner and Traynor made it 6-5 with kills. The set was a back and forth affair as CSUSM stayed connected, and they came back from down 22-18 to make it 24-23. However, an untimely service error from the hosts gave CCU the 25-23 set win and a chance for their fourth straight sweep.

The Cougars saw the end in sight and hit the gas, coming back from an early deficit to take a 12-10 lead on a block from Crist and DeBoer. After back-to-back kills from Crist, freshman setter Danielle Seabern notched consecutive aces to put her stamp on the match and make it 17-12. CCU pushed from there, giving themselves a match point after a Traynor kill. The junior setter ended things on her own, dialing up an ace to end the set and the match 25-15.

The offense continued to be effective, hitting .330 on the match and holding their opponent to .230. Conner paced the offense with 11 kills, followed by Traynmor with nine and Kilgore with eight. Traynor had 26 assists while Kristina House picked up 11 digs.

The Cougars now head into conference play with four straight sweeps, a 5-3 record and loads of momentum. RMAC play begins at home on September 19 with a tilt against Chadron State at 6 p.m. MST.
