Cougars Close California Roadtrip with 1-1 Tie at Vanguard

COSTA MESA, CA- The Cougars closed their California roadtrip on Saturday with a matchup against Vanguard in Costa Mesa. CCU showed great resiliency after conceding a first half goal, equalizing in the second period and battling to a 1-1 draw after 90 minutes of play.

Taylor Tobolski just missed high in the 15th minute, and the pressure from Vanguard paid off in the 24th minute with a goal off a corner kick. Lexi Taitague had a shot saved moments later, and a late flurry by the Lions before the break was quelled by several Mia Mares saves as Vanguard led by one heading to halftime.

Adjustments at the half paid dividends for the Cougars as they upped the offensive pressure and found ways to slow down the Vanguard attack. Sophia Tagge had a good look saved a few minutes in before Kira Merrell just missed moments later. Tagge would not be denied on her next attempt as she headed one into the back of the net to notch her second goal of the season and make it 1-1. The goal was especially sweet for the California native who grew up and played in high school at Orange Lutheran not far from Vanguard. With the score now level, Both teams had looks on goal saved, and despite their best efforts neither team could break the 1-1 tie as the final whistle blew on a draw.

Colorado Christian will now begin RMAC play with a trip to Grand Junction on September 26 as they take on Colorado Mesa with kickoff set for 7 p.m. MST.
