SPEARFISH, SD- The Cougars headed north for their first road conference matchup at Black Hills State on Friday. It was a dominant effort from the visitors as they swept their way to a convincing victory to improve to 3-0 in the RMAC and claim their seventh straight win overall.
CCU started hot as they raced to a 12-10 lead and pulled away from there. A seven-point run keyed by kills from
Suzanna Conner and
Renee Phillips as the Cougars went up 19-10. On set point, Janelle DeBoer slammed home the kill for the 25-16 victory.
Another quick start saw a 6-1 lead develop after a kill from
Alissa Gregory-Obiedo, and
Connelly Kilgore later put her team up 11-4 with a kill. Kilgore continued to fire on all cylinders with two more kills for a 21-13 advantage, and the Cougars closed the set out with a Gregory-Obiedo kill for the 25-18 win.
Trying to avoid the sweep, the Yellowjackets fought hard in set number three to keep pace with the Cougars. BHSU led 12-10 before Conner, Phillips and Gregory-Obiedo slammed home kills to put their team up 14-13. Things came down to the wire, as Black Hills saved a pair of match points at 24-22 to level the set at 24-24. CCU showed their experience and skill to close things out as Kilgore notched a kill and DeBoer and Gregory-Obiedo finished things with an emphatic block for the 26-24 victory for the sweep.
Kilgore led the offense with 11 kills, and Conner followed with 10 while Deboer had eight.
Krista Traynor tallied 31 assists, and
Kristina House led the back row with 15 digs.
CCU continue their roadtrip on Saturday with a matchup at South Dakota Mines at 6 p.m. MST.
