CCU Fall 1-0 to Crosstown Rival MSU Denver

LAKEWOOD, CO- The Cougars returned home for a matchup under the lights with MSU Denver on Sunday evening. A converted penalty kick early in the second half proved the difference as the Roadrunners held on for a 1-0 victory.

MSU Denver got off to a fast start, forcing keeper Campbell Wolfgram to make a trio of early saves. Findlay Coleman put a shot on goal midway through the half that was saved, but neither team could break through as halftime arrived with a 0-0 tie.

Things started tough for CCU in the second half as a takedown in the box saw the Roadrunners earn a penalty kick less than a minute into play. MSUD converted the chance for a 1-0 lead. Another tough break came five minutes later as Iasonas Nikolaidis was shown a red on a tackle on a streaking Roadrunner and the Cougars were forced to play with 10 men the rest of the half. Wolfgram made several more saves before Salvador Fernandes had his attempt saved. A late look from Oscar Sreckov was saved as MSU Denver came away with a hard fought 1-0 victory.

Conference play now begins for the Cougars as they open up with a matchup at Fort Lewis on October 3 at 7 p.m. MST.
