Durango, CO- The Cougars hit the road this week, playing in Durango, CO Thursday night against Fort Lewis College. After a slow start for the Cougars, a roaring third quarter saw a Cougars impressive comeback, only to fall just short in the fourth quarter, losing 71-81.
Both teams saw a slow start to the game on Thursday night, with the first points of the game coming almost two minutes in. The Skyhawks would quickly go up 5-0 before
Elise Grosdidier would put her team on the board, draining a jumper from mid-range. The rest of the quarter would be all Skyhawks, scoring twelve unanswered points with no answers from CCU. The hosts would leave the first quarter leading the Cougars 11-22.
The second quarter was a stalemate for both teams. Every time the Cougars would threaten to chip away at the lead, the Skyhawks would respond.
Samantha Wattawa would have a strong quarter, scoring 7 points coupled with 3 rebounds. The Skyhawks would be able to build their lead three points beyond the first quarter, going into half leading CCU 30-44.
The third quarter saw a completely revitalized squad, lead by none other than
Hayley Luther, opening up the half with a steal and quick bucket.
Jordon Heckert would drain a three to cut the lead to single digits before she would hit yet another three just two minutes later. Both teams would go back and forth,
Elise Grosdidier managing to hit another jump shot between
Jordon Heckerts tear would continue. Heckert would score five unanswered the put the Cougars within just three points. A last second bucket from deep would send the Cougars into the final quarter down 6 points, 55-61.
A Heckert jumper to start the quarter would put the Cougars within four as they continued to battle for the comeback win. Despite the amazing comeback fight, four points would be the closest the Cougars would come to reaching the Skyhawks. Heckert and Grosdidier would continue to put up points on the board until the end of the buzzer, as CCU would fall to Fort Lewis 71-81.
Jordon Heckert would lead the team in points (18), rebounds (7), and steals (3) as she continued to shine bright for the Cougars.
Elise Grosdidier would follow in close pursuit with 15 points, as
Ja'Shelle Johnson would score 13 points, leading the team with 4 assists. CCU now sits 1-8 in RMAC, still looking for their first road win.
The Cougars will close the weekend out in Alamosa to play Adams State, currently 2
nd in the RMAC with only one conference loss. Tip-off is scheduled for 1 PM MST as the Cougars continue to build for the second half of conference play.
