Cougars Push Grizzlies to the Brink in Narrow Loss

ALAMOSA, CO- Colorado Christian continued their roadtrip on Saturday with a trip to one of the league's top teams in Adams State. The Cougars went toe to toe with the Grizzlies, pushing them to the brink in a narrow 60-55 loss.

Hayley Luther started the scoring with an early three-pointer, and the visitors got another three from Jordon Heckert to tie the game at 6-6 in the first quarter. Layups from Maley Wilhelm and Josie Grosdidier put CCU ahead 10-8, and Wilhelm and Elise Grosdidier closed the quarter with layups to give their team a 14-12 advantage heading to the second.

The two teams battled back and forth, trading baskets and playing strong defense to limit a high scoring affair. After the hosts took a three point lead, Samantha Wattawa cut the gap with a layup, and Heckert drilled another three to put the Cougars back on top. The two teams would go to the break separated by a single point with ASU on top 24-23.

Ja'Shelle Johnson quickly nailed a jumper early in the third, and the third basket from beyond the arc from Heckert kept things close. The Grizzlies would go on a run from there, pulling ahead by as many as seven points before Josie got a pair of baskets to go to bring things close again. The hosts took a 47-42 lead to the final period after a pair of free throws from Wattawa tightened the gap.

A slow start to the fourth quarter would doom the Cougars, as they could not put in a basket until the 4:18 mark in the period. A Heckert three cut the gap to nine, and CCU did all they could to rally with two more buckets from Heckert and a layup from Josie to make it a six point contest with 1:01 remaining. Wattawa brought things even closer with 33 seconds when she got a tipin to go to make it 57-53, but a trio of late free throws proved too much in an eventual 60-55 setback.

Heckert led the offensive efforts with 20 points and 13 rebounds for a double-double that also included a block and steal. Wattawa had a big game for a double-double of her own with 10 points and an impressive 15 rebounds, while Johnson dished out three assists to lead her team in that category.

CCU will return to Lakewood for a few days before hitting the road again for a matchup in Salt Lake City against Westminster University on January 29 with tipoff set for 5:30 p.m. MST.
