SALT LAKE CITY, UT- The Cougars continued their four-game roadtrip on Thursday evening with an important tilt in Utah at Westminster. Using consistent play and some tough defense, CCU came away with a well deserved 74-65 victory over the Griffins.
Porter Bazil quickly put in a layup 15 seconds into the contest, and
Schafer Reichart continued the momentum with consecutive layups of his own. A three-pointer from Porter had the Cougars on top 17-16,
Pierce Bazil drilled a three to stretch the lead.
The offense continued to find their rhythm as
Joshua Reid put in a layup and Porter splashed in another three. A Reid three sent the visitors to their largest lead of the night with a 30-18 advantage.
Lincoln Cantrall got in on the barrage from beyond the arc with a three, and the Cougars held the lead heading to halftime 45-36.
The defenses settled in more in the second half, but Porter continued his stellar night with his third three-pointer of the contest early in the second half. The Griffins made a push from there, trimming the lead to just 56-54, but yet another Porter three kept the hosts at bay.
A pair of
Andrew Reichart free throws sent the lead back to 10 at 66-56 with 5:03 to go, but Westminster refused to go down without a fight. The hosts rallied furiously, going on a 9-0 run to cut the gap to just one point with 1:20 remaining. Cool under pressure,
Zachary Reed sank a massive three and the Cougars got a stop on the other end to force the Griffins to foul and send a trio of CCU players to the line to seal the 74-65 victory in Utah.
The Cougars got a huge night from Porter with five made threes for 21 points with five rebounds and a pair of assists. Andrew was stellar with 15 points, six boards and a steal, while Reid was steady with seven points and a team high eight rebounds.
CCU will look to avenge a conference opening loss when they travel to Western Colorado to take on the Mountaineers on January 31 with tipoff set for 3 p.m. MST.
