Down to the Wire: Mountain Lions Seal Last-Minute Victory Over CCU

Lakewood, CO- Colorado Christian faced UCCS looking for their second conference win on Tuesday night. CCU dropped their first loss of the new year in the final minute against the Mountain Lions in a tightly contested conference clash, losing 55-60.

The early minutes of the game would dictate the night, as the Mountain Lions and Cougars went back and forth from the start. After a three pointer and free throw from the visitors, Elise Grosdidier responded with a quick layup, coupled with a three-pointer from Jordon Heckert. The Mountain Lions would respond with a fast break and maintain a lead going into the first break, leading CCU 13-18.

The second quarter would see a strong UCCS performance, with ten unanswered points for 8 minutes of the quarter. CCU's Elise Grosdidier would break the silence with a jumper before going into half trailing 19-29.

Refusing to accept the script written in the second quarter, Jordon Heckert came out of halftime with a mission, scoring two quick points, only to drain a three the next play. Hayley Luther and Elise Grosdidier continued to chip away at the lead, the Cougars finding the lead with 4 minutes left in the quarter. The gritty end to the quarter would find the visitors leading the Cougars 44-45 heading into the final quarter.

While the Cougars would claw their way to a tied ball game with 9 minutes left, they would never find the lead in the final quarter. Heckert and Grosdidier continued to shine for the Cougars as they would find the bucket in the early minutes of the quarter on free throws. In a quick sequence of 33 seconds and three plays, UCCS would splash five quick points, leading the Cougars 57-47 with just 6 minutes left. After five made free throws from CCU, Ja'shelle Johnson would drain a three to put the contest to just two points. A free throw from the visitors would leave it a 3 point game with three minutes remaining. Despite the incredible fight from the Cougars, they would be unable to find any more points on the night, as a turnover from the Cougars with 29 seconds would leave UCCS to escape the night, handing the Cougars their fourth conference loss.

Jordon Heckert would lead the Cougars with 19 points. Elise Grosdidier led the team in rebounds with 9 boards, also scoring 13 points. Ja'Shelle Johnson would lead the team with 3 steals as 8 different Cougars would find the scoreboard.

Now sitting 4-9 overall, and 1-4 in conference, the Cougars look forward to the 15 remaining conference matchup's. The Cougars will be back in action on the road at CSU-Pueblo on Saturday, January 10th, with tip-off scheduled for 1:00pm MST.
