Cougars Level With Roadrunners to Close Out Regular Season

Lakewood, CO – The Cougars hosted MSU Denver Wednesday night, playing in their final match of the regular season. Two goals in the first 5 minutes of the match would be all the scoring action of the night, neither side able to find the game winner.

The last game of the regular season didn't disappoint, the Cougars finding the back of the net just 1:59 into the game. A corner kick found the head of Jordyn Rollins, airing the ball towards the back post. A fantastic save from the Roadrunner keeper fell to the feet of Sophia Tagge, smashing the ball home for the early 1-0 lead and her first goal of the season.

It only took MSU Denver 2 minutes to respond, ripping a shot from outside the 18, bar-down past the goal line for the immediate equalizer. Despite the shocking response, the Cougars continued to push forward, creating chances and keeping the Roadrunners on their heels. CCU finished the first half with 10 shots and five corner kicks, desperately looking to regain the lead.

The second half would be all but the same story, with the Cougars controlling the attack and searching for the breakthrough. The Cougars fired 12 shots after the break, including several late opportunities, MSU Denver goalkeeper Mariah Fletemeyer managing to keep the Cougars off the scoreboard. Berens would record a shot just outside the post in the 87th, with Rollins nearly scoring in the 88th after a chaotic sequence in the box.

Colorado Christian finished the match with a commanding 22-5 advantage in shots and 11 corner kicks, but the Cougars were unable to turn their offensive pressure into a game-winning goal as the match ended in a 1-1 draw. Sophia Tagge lead the Cougars with 3 shots and sole goal of the game for the Cougs.

The night saw the Cougars punch their ticket into the RMAC tournament, their second appearance in just three years. With the first round set on Friday, October 30th, the Cougars will have quick turnaround and travel to Salt Lake City, Utah to take on the Westminster Griffins. The last matchup between the two sides saw a 0-0 draw, as each will look to advance to the next round of the RMAC tournament.
