COLORADO SPRINGS, CO- The Cougars opened up their first road conference series on Friday as they made the trip south to take on UCCS. Led by seven total homers across both competitions, CCU claimed the doubleheader sweep by scores of 10-7 and 10-6.
GAME ONE
The Mountain Lions jumped in front early in game one with a leadoff homer, but
Maya Schroeder made sure the lead did not last long with a three-run blast over the fence in center field to put her team on top. The outstanding freshman made it two home runs in two at bats as Schroeder once again went deep in the fourth with a runner on for the 5-1 advantage.
Another ball left Mountain Lion Field off the bat of
Kat Hanson as she unleashed a towering solo bomb in the fifth, and
Felesha LePenske nearly homered as well as she slashed a double off the top of the wall in left field to plate
Arriana Wright and make it 7-1.
UCCS used a pair of homers to bring the deficit to 7-4, but Wright kept the power surge going for the Cougars with a two-run shot to left field in the seventh.
Leah Garcia added an insurance run with a solo homer to center as the lead grew to 10-4. Despite a three-run rally in the bottom frame from the hosts, CCU held on for the 10-7 victory.
Elyse McMullin improved to a perfect 4-0 in the circle with six innings pitched while
Hanna Espinoza closed out the final inning. Schroeder had a game to remember, starting the game 2-2 with two home runs and 5 RBI before the Mountain Lions opted to intentionally walk her in her final two at bats. In total, the Cougars tallied five homers in the contest to power their way to victory.
GAME TWO
Colorado Christian jumped on top early in game two as Garcia singled home Wright and an error allowed LePenske to score to make it 2-0. An unfortunate error in the bottom of the first tied the contest at 2-2, but once again the Cougars had an answer, coming in the third inning.
Wright drew a walk and advanced to second on a wild pitch before LePenske singled her home. A Garcia single and intentional walk of Schroeder loaded the bases for
Sarah Dollerschell, and she came through in the clutch with a massive grand slam over the center field fence as CCU went ahead 7-2.
McMullin got in on the homer party with a two-run shot of her own in the fourth to make it 9-2, and Wright drew an RBI walk with the bases juiced for the final run of the game for CCU as the score stood at 10-2. The Mountain Lions managed to avoid the run-rule in the fifth with a pair of runs, and two more in the sixth made things closer, but a quick 1,2,3 seventh ended the contest with a 10-6 Cougars victory.
Lisa Liddell picked up the complete game victory for her fourth win of the season, while Dollerschell provided the power with her grand slam to send her team to victory.
The Cougars will close their series at UCCS with a doubleheader on February 28 with game times set for 11 a.m and 1 p.m. MST.
