SAINT LEO, FL- The Cougars continued play at Saint Leo on Saturday with a doubleheader against the Lions. After a tough 16-1 loss in game one, the second contest was a back and forth battle that went the way of the hosts 11-7.
GAME ONE
The Lions got on the board with a run in the first, but CCU responded via a
Landry Hamm RBI single that scored
Mason Hagel-Pitt. SLU would get three more in the second to go ahead 4-1, and they only piled on from there. The runs continued to come from Saint Leo in the innings that followed, and they eventually pulled away for a 16-1 victory.
GAME TWO
Looking to punch back in game two of the day, Hagel-Pitt did just that in the first as he launched a three run homer to left center field to put his team on top early. A solo shot from the Lions made it 3-1 after one inning of play. The next two innings passed with no score before Saint Leo struck for five runs in the fourth to grab a 6-3 lead.
Unwilling to let his team fall behind any more,
Aidan Welsh uncorked a three-run bomb in the fifth to level the contest at 6-6. After SLU took a 7-6 lead in the seventh,
Lukas Hinze tallied a sac fly to tie things again at 7-7 in the eighth. Unfortunately the Lions rallied to score four runs in their half of the eighth, closing out the game with an 11-7 final score.
The two long balls from Hagel-Pitt and Welsh powered the offense, while
Chad Naf pitched a solid four innings with four strikeouts.
CCU will look to salvage the series finale tomorrow February 8 as they take on the Lions once more at 10 a.m. MST.
