DENVER, CO- The Cougars looked to make history on Friday as they took on Regis on the road looking for win #500 for the program in its 14th year of existence. Needing just one win to hit 500 wins, CCU did so in emphatic fashion as they dominated the Rangers for a 20-1 victory in game one and a 20-3 win in game two to mercy-rule the hosts twice.
GAME ONE
The first inning set the tone for the entire game as the Cougars jumped all over Regis with an explosive 15 run top of the first. After the first two batters reached,
Arriana Wright continued her torrid season at the plate with a three-run homer.
Leah Garcia notched an RBI sac fly, while
Peyton Marvel doubled home a run to make it 5-0.
An error allowed Marvel to score, and
Paisley Williamson came home on the throw after an
Abbie Walden bunt. Leading 7-0, Wright came up to the plate with the bases loaded and completely broke the game open as she blasted a grand slam to make it 11-0 and start her game out 2-2 with two homers and 7 RBI. Four more runs came home in the inning, capped by a
Kat Hanson RBI single for the 15-0 advantage as she came up to bat three times in the inning.
Hanson singled in another run in the third, and
Elyse McMullin doubled in two more runs to send her team ahead 18-0.
Felesha LePenske singled in another, while Marvel tucked a homer inside the left field foul pole to make it 20-0. Regis managed to score a run in the fourth, but Garcia got the run back on a double to send the game to the final score of 21-1 in run-rule fashion.
It was one of the most dominant games the Cougars have had offensively as they collected 18 hits with three homers and 18 RBI. LePenske earned the win in the circle, while Wright powered the offense with 7 RBI. The mercy-rule win marked the 500th victory for the team in 14 seasons of play for the Cougars as they continue to make their name as a perennial power in not only the conference but the region.
GAME TWO
The momentum continued in game two as Hanson scored on an error, and Garcia picked up a sac fly to make it 2-0. The scoring continued in the second inning on a Hanson single in the second, and Wright doubled home two more to make it 5-0. LePenske singled in a run, while
Maya Schroeder blasted a two RBI triple as the lead ballooned to 8-0.
Already in run-rule territory with an 8-0 advantage heading into the third, the Cougars continued to pour it on as Wright drew a bases loaded walk for an RBI and LePenske tallied a run-scoring fielder's choice. Garcia then broke things open entirely with a bases clearing triple for 3 RBI and the 13-0 lead.
Regis managed to get their offense going a bit in the third with three runs scored, but any semblance of momentum that built was quickly stopped with an RBI double from
Sarah Dollerschell and a two-run single from LePenske in the fourth. The onslaught continued as Garcia and Schroeder notched RBI to send the Cougars ahead 18-3.
Alexandra Johnson and
Meghan Sidell capped the scoring with RBI singles in the fifth as the dominant effort closed with a 20-3 final in five innings.
Lisa Liddell picked up win #8 of the year in the circle, while Garcia led her team with 5 RBI in the contest.
Now sitting at 14-0 in the RMAC and riding a 20 game win streak, the Cougars will look to go for the series sweep tomorrow March 14 with another doubleheader at Regis at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. MST.
