ALAMOSA, CO - The Cougars continued conference play with a doubleheader on Saturday against Adams State. While CCU had great looks both offensive and defensive, the hosts got lucky at the right time, winning both games in walk off fashion 8-9 and 10-12.
GAME ONE
CCU continued with their amazing hitting performance from yesterday with
Lukas Hinze hitting for a leadoff double. With runners on, a single to right center from
Aidan Welsh scored Hinze, and the senior
Cade Lacy managed to get a single to score Welsh and
Mason Hagel-Pitt to take a 3-0 lead early.Â
CCU did well to keep zeros on the board against the Grizzlies, but the hosts took advantage and put up a two-run home run in the third and fourth inning, also scoring on a 2 RBI double to take the lead 6-5.Â
The fifth and sixth innings saw the Cougars retake the lead, with
Austin DeMello coming in to pinch hit, ripping one up the middle for a single that saw Welsh round third and score. DeMello scored as well with
Landry Hamm reaching first on an error by ASU, and
Gregory Rangel got himself an RBI with Hinze scoring for a 8-6 lead. CCU couldn't hold on to the lead as another two run home run from ASU tied the game, and eventually helped them carry all the momentum to walk it off in the seventh 9-8.
CCU did well in the batter's box, tallying 12 hits in a tough loss situation. Hagel-Pitt led the team with 3 RBI, while Hinze scored three times.
GAME TWO
CCU started in front of ASU again in game two, scoring in the first inning with Welsh gaining an RBI double scoring Hinze. ASU got back in the game in the third with a solo home run and a fielder's choice to take the lead 2-1.
Brandon de Hondol trickled one down the left field line for a stand-up double scoring Lacy. Hinze then got himself a 2 RBI double, scoring De Hondol and eventually Hinze came across home plate to score thanks to a triple from Welsh.Â
CCU kept the runs coming, taking the lead 10-6 going to the seventh. However, that lead would vanish quite quickly with ASU scoring six runs and the walk off home run to win the game 12-10 and take the series lead 2-1 over CCU.
Colorado Christian will look to split the series against Adams State in the finale March 15 with first pitch scheduled for 11 a.m. MST.
