Cougars Fall to Colorado Mesa in Series Finale

LAKEWOOD, CO - The Cougars and Mavericks took the field for the series finale at All Star Park on Sunday afternoon. CCU did their best to rally themselves into the game, but in the end, CMU took the series sweep and won the game 11-16.

The visitors started on top with a three-run home run to take the lead in the first 3-0. CCU would respond slightly with Nathan Mensen getting a single up the middle to score Mason Hagel-Pitt. CMU did more damage in the second inning, putting up four more runs over Chad Naf on the mound for the Cougars.

Trailing 8-2 going to the bottom of the fifth, CCU put on their rally caps and fought their way back into the game. Mensen got on by walking, Cade Lacy got on by a fielding error and got Mensen to third. Landry Hamm got the first RBI with a single to score Mensen, Ethan Kang followed that with another RBI single. With two runners on, Lukas Hinze sent a deep hit to right center to the wall and got himself a 2 RBI sliding triple to give CCU a boost of momentum. Gregory Rangel would bring the seventh run in for CCU, scoring Hinze and bringing the Cougars back within one 8-7.

However, the Mavericks responded by scoring this time on a fielding error by CCU to take the lead by four. It was quiet between the sixth and seventh between the two sides, but the Mavericks rumbled more runs on the board with a triple of their own. CCU would attempt another ninth inning rally, scoring four runs unearned, but it wasn't enough against the Mavericks as they pulled the series sweep winning the series finale 16-11.

Cody Hill, Dylan Novotny, and Austin DeMello all saw action for CCU on the mound. Lukas Hinze led the Cougars with 5 RBI with 6 AB.

Almost at the halfway point in conference play, CCU sits behind Regis University and CSU-Pueblo, which saw those two teams play each other this weekend with both teams splitting their series 2-2. Those were both teams' first set of conference wins and will be the Cougars' next two matchups.

Colorado Christian will travel down south to Pueblo to take on the Thunderwolves March 27-29. First pitch on the 27th is scheduled for 2 p.m. MDT.
