PUEBLO, CO- The Cougars began their fourth RMAC series of the season on the road on Friday as they headed south to take on CSU Pueblo. CCU surged to a seven-run lead midway through the game, and the visitors held on for a big 10-6 victory over the Thunderwolves.
The offense got right to work in the first inning as
Lukas Hinze drew a walk to lead off and advanced to third on a
Gregory Rangel single.
Mason Hagel-Pitt notched an RBI sac fly, and
Nathan Mensen singled in another run for the early 2-0 lead.
Hagel-Pitt notched another RBI with a single in the third, and the offense continued to tack on runs with an
Ethan Kang RBI single in the fourth. Hagel-Pitt continued to do damage with another timely sac fly in the fifth to make it 5-0.
Cade Lacy capped the inning with a first pitch bomb, sending a ball to deep left field for a two-run shot as the Cougars surged to a 7-0 lead.
CSU Pueblo rallied for four runs in the fifth to make it a game, but Rangel got a run back in the sixth to make it 8-4 with an RBI single. A seventh inning homer from the hosts once again made it a three run contest, but a pair of huge insurance runs in the eighth on an error and a Rangel single sent CCU ahead 10-5. A single run in the bottom half of the eighth from the Thunderwolves was not enough as CCU held on for the important 10-6 victory.
Zachary Hill picked up the win with a quality 5.0 innings pitched, striking out a pair and scattering four hits to notch the victory.
Braxton Davis and
Dylan Novotny closed out the final four innings, with Davis going three full innings of strong relief. Hagel-Pitt led the offense with 3 RBI, followed by a pair of RBI from Rangel and Lacy.
The Cougars will continue play in Pueblo with a doubleheader at Rawlings Field tomorrow March 28 with game times set for 12 and 3 p.m. MDT.
