PUEBLO, CO - The Cougars returned to Rawlings Field to continue their conference series with the Thunderwolves with a pair of double header games. In two highly intense games between the two teams, the Thunderwolves prevailed in two sixth inning rallies to win both games today 7-9 and 1-3.
GAME ONE
The Cougars started with getting
Gregory Rangel on base after walking and
Mason Hagel-Pitt and
Cade Lacy getting hit by pitches. With bases loaded,
Nathan Mensen singled through the gap to score two runs to give CCU the early lead. CSUP would rip the ball for a double down the left field line to tie the game 2-2.
Lacy would get himself a pair of RBI, scoring Hagel-Pitt and Rangel again for CCU to give the visitors the lead once again. CSUP would follow suit and tie the game a second time 4-4. CCU would ignite the bats in the fourth inning with three straight doubles coming from Hagel-Pitt,
Aidan Welsh, and Lacy.
Nathan Owens was the lone sacrifice fly out for CCU, scoring Lacy to give the Cougars the 7-4 lead after four. The defense played a pivotal role for CCU, especially in the bottom of the fourth pulling a double play to retire the Thunderwolves.
The hosts got a jolt of momentum getting two runners on and hitting a no doubter to tie the game 7-7. The rally continued for CSUP, scoring two more runs to take the lead. CCU didn't have any gas in the tank as the Thunderwolves took game one of the double header 9-7.
Brady Ritzmann pitched well to start, going 4.0 innings and only allowing four runs to score. Lacy led with 3 RBI and Hagel-Pitt scoring three times.
GAME TWO
It was quite the pitchers battle for game two of the day, with
Cody Hill starting and putting together a very good performance keeping the score 0-0 through the first couple innings. CCU did their best to get something going, but Pueblo's pitcher was throwing heater after heater.
The game got very tense when Hill threw a pitch behind the batter's head, then the next pitch hit the batter. The Thunderwolves' dugout was not happy, and the benches cleared out to argue the throw. Hill was ejected from the game after that series of pitches, as well as an assistant coach for CSUP. The hosts proceeded to rip a two-run home run to take the lead.Â
The Cougars managed to get a little energy back with a solo home run from
Brandon de Hondol, but it wasn't enough after another run came in for CSUP as they took game two of the day 3-1.
The Cougars will look to salvage the series and split with CSUP tomorrow March 29 with first pitch scheduled for 12 p.m. MDT.
