LAKEWOOD, CO - Colorado Christian returned to All Star Park Sunday afternoon after waiting for the snow to clear the field of play to take on the Skyhawks from Fort Lewis College. A dominant offensive performance from the Cougars helped them secure a pair of wins on day one 8-3 and 11-1.
GAME ONE
The Cougars shut down the Skyhawks to start the game with
Peyton Marvel collecting two line outs at short stop, then the action started with
Leah Garcia hitting a double to get on base and scoring two runs for CCU. Another double this time from the freshman
Maya Schroeder scored two more runs, Shroeder would score from Marvel and
Paisley Williamson helped give the Cougars a six spot in the first inning.
Williamson would get a two RBI single in the third to take the lead 8-0 for CCU, as the defense would turn four double plays to keep the score 8-0. CCU looked to end the game early in run-rule fashion, but the visitors didn't go down without a fight with a solo home run in the fifth to keep the game going. FLC would tack on two more runs, but the Cougars finished the game later on with the final score of 8-3.
Felesha LePenske collected her seventh win and remains perfect with a 7-0 record in the circle with five innings pitched and
Hanna Espinoza closing out the final two innings. A trio of CCU players collected two RBI, including Schroeder who now sits tied for first on the team for most RBI this season with 25.
GAME TWO
The sophomore
Kat Hanson jumped on Fort Lewis early in game two with a lead off home run to left field to give CCU an early 1-0 lead. The Skyhawks would respond back with a sacrifice fly out to center field to tie the game 1-1 two innings later. The Cougars would get back in action in the fourth with Garcia getting on base due to an error that would see her sprint across the diamond to get on third base.
Abbie Walden would double down the line to score two runs, then Williamson, after getting hit by a pitch, would get to score another run from a fielder's choice play.
Schroeder got herself a ground rule double after ripping one to left field just barely staying in the outfield and scored two runs in the fifth. The Cougars didn't take their foot off the gas pedal as more and more runs came in, and in the sixth they would end it with LePenske launching the ball out for a no-doubter home run for the 11-1 mercy-rule win.
Lisa Liddell won the game for CCU, now taking her record to 6-2 in the circle going the entire 6.0 innings. LePenske and Hanson both collected 3 RBI to increase their batting averages.
Colorado Christian will close out their series against Fort Lewis, looking to stay perfect in conference play with first pitch scheduled on March 9 at 11 a.m. MST.
