LAKEWOOD, CO- The Cougars closed their four-game series with Fort Lewis on Monday with their second doubleheader in as many days at All Star Park. The bats brought the power to lead CCU to the series sweep of the Skyhawks with a 13-3 mercy-rule victory in game one before a 6-3 win in game two.
GAME ONE
Fort Lewis went ahead early with a first inning two-run homer, but CCU quickly responded.
Arriana Wright singled home a run, and
Leah Garcia then uncorked a three-run home run to left field to make it 4-2.
Kat Hanson and Wright knocked a pair of run-scoring doubles in the second to make it 6-2, and
Felesha LePenske capped the inning with a two-run blast as the Cougars surged ahead 8-2. A sac fly in the third from the Skyhawks did little to slow the hosts down as
Meghan Sidell tallied an RBI sac fly before
Alexandra Johnson pinch hit for her first collegiate at bat and proceeded to single home a run to make it 10-3. Wright ended the affair in run-rule fashion in the fifth as she unleashed a no-doubter to center field for a three run homer to send the Cougars to a convincing 13-3 victory.
Elyse McMullin picked up the win with 5.0 innings of work with just two earned runs allowed. Wright powered the offense 5 RBI on 3 hits and three runs scored.
GAME TWO
Looking to avoid the series sweep, the visitors once again struck first with a run in the first inning. Once again the Cougars answered immediately with an RBI single from Wright and a
Maya Schroeder sac fly. Garcia notched an RBI double an inning later before FLC tightened the gap to 3-2 in the fourth.
The bottom of the fourth would prove to be the difference as Wright blasted a two-run big fly and LePenske followed with a solo shot of her own to send CCU ahead 6-2. A run in the fifth for FLC was not enough as CCU held on for a 6-3 win and secured the series sweep.
Lisa Liddell nabbed the win with 5.0 innings pitched, while
Hanna Espinoza notched her second save of the season with 2.0 innings in the circle and a pair of strikeouts. Wright once again led her team as she tallied 3 RBI to bring her total on the day to 8 RBI.
Now sitting at 12-0 in RMAC competition, the Cougars will head to crosstown rival Regis March 13-14 with first pitch Friday set for 12 p.m. MST.
