SPEARFISH, SD- History was made on Saturday in South Dakota as the Cougars took on Black Hills State in a conference doubleheader. With their 13-4 run-rule victory in game one of the day, CCU broke the program record for wins in a row, claiming their 35th straight victory. They continued their winning ways in game two, claiming a 5-3 victory to keep their record in RMAC play perfect at 30-0 and improve their win streak to 36 games.
GAME ONE
The offense got going early as
Felesha LePenske notched an RBI single in the first. Paisley Williams brought two more runs across the plate in the second with a two-run double, and
Kat Hanson singled home Williamson for the 4-0 advantage. BHSU put two on the board with a pair of solo shots, but that was as close as they would get all game.
A third inning onslaught began with an RBI double from
Maya Schroeder, and
Peyton Marvel broke things open with a three-run homer for the 8-2 lead.
Sarah Dollerschell followed with a solo bomb of her own as the lead continued to grow.
Leah Garcia notched an RBI groundout in the fifth, and Schroeder lined out to score another run. Marvel capped the scoring with an RBI double for the 13-2 lead. The Yellowjackets plated two in their half of the fifth, but it was not enough in a 13-4 mercy-rule victory for CCU to make history with 35 straight wins and counting.
LePenske scattered five hits with a pair of strikeouts to move to 16-0 in the circle, while Marvel paced the offense with 4 RBI.
GAME TWO
The second game of the day was a much lower scoring affair as
Lisa Liddell faced off with the Yellowjackets' ace Sophia Honse. Neither team scored through two innings of play, but LePenske put her team ahead 2-0 in the third with a two-run single.
A sac fly from Marvel in the fourth made it 3-0, and Hanson delivered a huge blow with a two-run homer for a 5-0 lead. The hosts used the long ball to make things closer, chasing Liddell with a two-run shot in the fourth and a solo bomb to begin the fifth to close the gap to 5-3.
Hanna Espinoza came in and calmed things down by inducing a pair of groundouts to end the threat in the fifth. She slammed the door on the game, earning her fourth save of the season with two more shutout innings including four strikeouts to seal the 5-3 victory.
Liddell earned win #12 with 4.1 innings tossed, and LePenske and Hanson led the offense with a pair of RBI each in the thrilling win.
The Cougars will look to secure the series sweep with another doubleheader tomorrow, April 12 at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. MDT at Yellow Jacket Field.
