GRAND JUNCTION, CO- The Cougars continued their historic win streak on Sunday with another doubleheader at Colorado Mesa. CCU completed the series sweep of the Mavericks with wins of 6-4 and 11-0 via mercy-rule as they improved to 36-0 in conference action and extended their win streak to an incredible 42 games.
GAME ONE
The offense got going early for the Cougars as
Felesha LePenske lined an RBI single to center field in the first, and
Maya Schroeder walked with the bases loaded to make it 2-0. The Mavs responded with a run in their half of the first as the lead shrunk to 2-1.
Arriana Wright restored the two-run lead in the third as she launched a homer to left field for the third straight game against CMU.The scoring slowed from there until Wright picked up another RBI with a single in the fifth to score
Kat Hanson.
Sarah Dollerschell singled home Schroeder as the lead grew to 5-1 in the sixth.
The Mavericks rallied back with a three-run homer in the sixth as they cut the gap to 5-4, but a
Peyton Marvel sac fly in the seventh capped the 6-4 victory for the Cougars.
LePenske now sits at 18-0 after a 6.0 inning effort with three strikeouts on 90 pitches thrown.
Hanna Espinoza picked up her fifth save of the season as she closed out the game in the final inning of action. Wright led her team with a pair of RBI, while Schroeder, Dollerschell and LePenske tallied an RBI apiece.
GAME TWO
The second game of the day was all Cougars as they used the third through sixth innings to pull away and mercy-rule the hosts. Hanson began the scoring as she lifted a sac fly to left field in the third to plate
Paisley Williamson. LePenske then smashed a game changing three-run homer to make it 4-0 after three innings played.
Elyse McMullin shut down the Mavs' bats and allowed her team to continue to grow the lead. Hanson singled in another run in the fourth, and McMullin notched a sac fly for the 6-0 advantage. An error in the sixth allowed another run to score for CCU, and Hanson lifted another sac fly for the 8-0 lead.
The bats stayed hot with a pair of extra base knocks as Wright smacked an RBI double for the 9-0 lead.
Leah Garcia capped the scoring with a two-run double as the Cougars surged to an 11-0 lead. The lead held up as the game ended early after six innings in the 11-0 victory for the visitors.
McMullin went the distance in the circle with 6.0 innings pitched, scattering four hits with four strikeouts on an economical 71 pitches thrown. Hanson and LePenske tallied 3 RBI apiece, while Garcia followed with 2.
The Cougars took their offense on the road once again in their four-game series at Colorado Mesa, outsourcing one of their traditionally toughest tests in conference play by an astounding tally of 41-6. They continued their historic win streak that now sits at 42 straight victories and a mark of 36-0 in RMAC competition.
CCU will return home for their final regular season home series April 24-25 as they take on Adams State at All Star Park
