Peyton Marvel Caps Series Sweep of Roadrunners with Walkoff Hit

LAKEWOOD, CO- Colorado Christian closed their series with MSU Denver on Friday with another doubleheader from All Star Park. After run-ruling the Roadrunners 10-2 in game one, CCU needed late heroics from Peyton Marvel to walk it off in game two 6-5.

GAME ONE
It was a very windy day in Lakewood, with the wind blowing to right field a majority of the day. MSU Denver used that to their advantage in the first with a solo homer from the second batter in their lineup to right field for the early 1-0 lead. Elyse McMullin knotted things up at 1-1 as she raced home on a wild pitch in the bottom half of the first.

A strong second inning featured a two-run single from the ever dangerous Kat Hanson and a McMullin RBI knock for the 4-1 lead. McMullin continued her stellar game in the fourth with a two-run single, and Leah Garcia broke the game open with a towering three-run homer to left center to push the lead to 9-1. The Roadrunners kept the game going with a solo homer in the fifth, but CCU responded to end things early as Hanson doubled home Paisley Williamson for the 10-2 victory.

Felesha LePenske was excellent once again in the circle, striking out seven and scattering three hits and two runs for her 15th victory of the year. McMullin and Garcia powered the offense with 3 RBI apiece.

GAME TWO
Looking for the series sweep in game two, the Cougars found themselves in a battle to claim the final game of the weekend. A first inning error from the MSU Denver defense allowed McMullin to touch home, but the Roadrunners responded in the second with a two-run knock to take the lead 2-1.

Hanson responded with an RBI double in the second, and Marvel doubled in the tiebreaking run in the third. Refusing to go down without a fight, the Roadrunners tied the game in the fourth and took the lead in the fifth off a solo homer for the 4-3 lead. The Cougars capitalized on an MSUD error in the sixth as Williamson reached first on an errant throw from the pitcher. Moments later, Hanson delivered a huge bomb that cleared the fence in right field to put CCU back on top 5-4.

Showing their resiliency once again, MSU Denvers' leadoff batter sent a solo shot to left center to tie the game back up at 5-5 heading to the bottom of the seventh. The Cougars showed their poise and quality with the pressure on as LePenske led off with a double to put herself into scoring position, and a Garcia double that appeared to be going out made it runners on second and third with no outs. Marvel then played the hero as she recorded her second walkoff hit of the season, singling home LePenske as the Cougars streamed onto the field to celebrate the series sweep and their 34th straight win. The 34 wins in a row ties a program record set in 2023 by the Cougars.

McMullin started in the circle, striking out six before giving way to Hanna Espinoza who threw 2.1 innings. Lisa Liddell picked up the victory with just 0.2 innings of work, notching a pair of groundouts to give her team a chance to walk it off. Hanson delivered a 3 RBI game, while Marvel followed her walkoff homer against Mines two series ago with another walkoff hit to secure the series sweep.

The Cougars will take their perfect 28-0 record in RMAC play on the road the next two weekends, starting with a four-game set at Black Hills State April 11-12 with first pitch day one set for 12 p.m. MDT.
