CCU Drop Tightly Contested Battle to Dallas Baptist

SAN DIEGO, CA- Colorado Christian continued play at the San Diego Invite on Friday as they took on Dallas Baptist University. In a tightly contested battle, the Cougars would fall in four sets to the Patriots.

DBU took an early 8-4 lead in set one, but CCU battled back within a point after a kill and block from Ana Aguilar. The Patriots began to grow the lead again, going ahead 18-12, but a block from Sienna Thatcher and Aguilar brought CCU back within 18-three points. DBU would ultimately pull away for the 25-19 set win.

The offense found a rhythm in set two, hitting .321 in the set to gain an advantage. Krista Traynor notched a kill for a 12-8 lead, and Connelly Kilgore and Giselle Haugen put down kills for the eventual 21-17 advantage. Sierra Crist chipped in with a kill as the Cougars took the set 25-20 to level things at a set apiece.

Crist began set three with a kill and ace to level things at 7-7 early in set three, and consecutive kills from Aguilar gave CCU the 15-13 lead. DBU fought back, scoring 7 of the next 8 points to take control 20-16. The Patriots would go on to score the final five points of the set to claim a 25-17 victory.

The Cougars battled to stay alive in set four, hanging within two points and in striking distance for a large portion of the set. A four-point run from DBU sent them ahead 18-12, and that surge gave them the momentum to claim the 25-21 set win to take the match 3-1.

Two program records were tied on Friday night as Ana Aguilar tied the single game record for block assists with 10 and total blocks with 12 as part of a dominant effort by the freshman from Iowa. Traynor had 10 kills, 19 assists and 15 digs to notch another triple-double, and Kendray Runyon tallied 15 assists on the night.

CCU will close pre-conference play with a final game in San Diego tomorrow against host Point Loma with first serve against the #11 Sea Lions set for 3 p.m. MST.
