Mackenzie (Kenzie) Averill transferred to Colorado Christian University (CCU) as a student in 2011. She grew up playing at the elite club level for Rush Soccer Club in Colorado and she also played for the prestigious Valor High School competeing in state championships for both club and high school multiple times. After several NCAA Division I and II scholarship offers and, new to her faith, Averill decided not to play college soccer and attended Point Loma Nazarene University.  However, after her freshman year of college, Averill decided to transfer to CCU to play goalkeeper from 2011-2013. During her playing career at CCU Averill was part of the National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA) Division I All-Conference and All Academic Teams. However, shortly after her accomplishments, Averill sustained a career ending back injury that resulted in a serious lumbar fusion back surgery.

Averill has been coaching since she was in high school; however, after the end of her college career, she began coaching as a developmental coach for youth players specializing in the goalkeeper position in Raleigh, NC.  In 2015, Averill moved back to Colorado and was a volunteer assistant with the CCU Women's Soccer Team from 2015-2017. During that time she fell in love with coaching at the collegiate level, but more importantly, she fell in love with coaching at a Christian university. In addition, Averill was apart of the coaching staff in 2016 when the program won their first NCCAA Division I National Title. Several months later, Averill accepted the full time assistant position. At that time, Averill commented: "I'm excited to continue being apart of the CCU Women's Soccer Program, as it is a place where I can encourage the athletes in their faith, point them towards Jesus, and do all of this while coaching them the game we all love.”

The 2020 season will be the third season for Averill as the assistant coach with the Cougars and her eighth year with the program.
