Cougars Lose Thriller at Home

New Mexico Highlands will be leaving town with a victory after narrowly escaping with a 1-0 victory over Colorado Christian on a beautiful fall morning in Lakewood, CO. It was a defensive fight throughout as both teams battled hard to earn the conference victory.

Neither team was able to gain an edge in the first half as they headed into break with the score still tied 0-0. The opening shot was fired by Highlands in the 72nd minute as Mallory Bostic headed a pass from Larissa Romero into the net past CCU goalie Shaya Lawrence.

Christian went on the offensive to try and even the score, and with a little over three minutes remaining Highlands fouled the Cougars just outside of the box bringing forth a free kick chance. Quinn Anderson took the kick and delivered a perfect strike that went over the out stretched hands of goalie Ashlyn Bruin. The ball ricocheted off the cross bar and bounced straight down for what looked like the equalizer, but the referee did not signal, and Highlands quickly cleared the ball out of the zone. The remaining time was burned by NMHU and ultimately got them the victory.

The unfortunate no-call still has the Cougars seeking their first victory of the year, as the loss drops them to 0-8-1 on the year and 0-5 in the RMAC. They will have another shot this weekend as they take on CSU-Pueblo on Sunday at Trailblazer Stadium in Lakewood. Game time is set for 1:30PM.
