McLemore Shines, but CCU Falls to UNC

Colorado Christian traveled up to Greeley on Tuesday night with plans to beat the Bears on their home court. However UNC had other ideas as they were able to pull away late in the second half and secure the 85-70 victory over the Cougs.

The game was a back and forth battle from the opening tip as each team was fighting hard to gain and maintain momentum. UNC took the early lead and built it up to 16 with about 10 minutes remaining in the first half. Then the CCU offense came to life and their defense clamped down on the Bears offensive attack. They went on a 12-2 run and cut the lead down to just seven points within a four minute stretch. The two teams remained close throughout the rest of the first, and heading into halftime UNC was leading 49-39.

Coach Kevin Lubbers fired the team up at halftime and they came out determined to make a run in the second half. Less than five minutes into the second, CCU had cut the deficit down to just four points and kept it within five until about ten minutes remained. From that point UNC took the game over and pulled away late to beat the Cougars by a final score of 85-70.

Sophomore guard Zach McLemore was an offensive wrecking ball, as he led all scorers on the night with 26 points. He shot 7-14 from the floor and 4-6 from behind the three point line. Sophomores Ty McGee and Isaiah Hanson also had good all-around games. McGee scored 11 points and grabbed seven rebounds. Hanson also tallied 11 points and added four rebounds and three steals to the stat line. Despite only playing 15 minutes, center Dominique Josephs was able to score eight points on 3-6 shooting and had three rebounds.

CCU has to get their passports ready for their next game as they head north of the border to Burnaby, British Columbia to take on Simon Fraser University for two games. They will play on Friday at 8PM MST, and Saturday at 6PM MST.
