Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Volleyball Takes Day One of Nationals

CCU Volleyball traveled to Orlando, FL to compete in the NCCAA National Tournament and ended day one 2-0. The Cougars are now on a seven game winning streak taking game one from Judson University and game two from Oakland City University. Both matches started off in the opponents favor, but then the Cougs were able to take three sets in a row from them.

Blue and gold won their match against the Judson Eagles in four sets with scores of 20-25, 25-17, 25-21, 25-13. Despite the fact that Colo. Christian started off slow, they had an amazing finish only letting their opponent score 13 points by completely shutting down their offense with a huge block.

Colorado Christian's wing hitters OH Mollie Bailey (6e, 43 att, .209) and RS Kaylee Pierce (2e, 39 att, .333) led the team with 15 kills each against the Judson Eagles. Setter, Kylee Wurster had one of her most aggressive games all year with two kills, 42 assists, 13 digs, and two blocks (1 solo). Christian was a brick wall with nine total team blocks compared to JU's two. Joy Kurosawa, libero for CCU, picked up 20 digs, which was the match high on both sides of the net.

Coach Harshman after their first match, "We are thrilled to be here at NCCAAs for a back to back appearance. I am proud of us getting a win under our belt in day one of pool play against a good opponent like Judson. We executed our game plan well and stayed focused until we got the job done."

After a short break Christian Volleyball was back on the court taking on Oakland City University. CCU dropped the first set 22-25 with five missed service errors. After correcting the back line, it looked a lot better for the Cougars who kept the lead in the next three sets 25-18, 25-15, and 25-9.

The numbers began to shoot through the roof for the Lady Cougars starting with outside hitter Mollie Bailey (2e, 33 att, .515) who crushed 19 balls. Tailing Bailey was senior Kaylee Pierce (4 blocks) with 18 kills on 32 attempts and three errors giving her a total hitting percentage of .469. Outside hitter Sophia Proano had 14 kills (2e, 32 att, .375), and Hope Baldrica dominated the middle of the court with five blocks. CCU totaled 11 team blocks. They ended this match hitting a .350, with 78 digs and 64 kills. Joy Kurosawa saved 22 balls from hitting the floor, another match high on both sides of the net.

Day one of Nationals makes for some of the best volleyball that Colo. Christian has ever played. Coach Andria Harshman at the end of the day stated "Our team is so smart right now on the court. With every mistake we make, we correct it through teamwork. It is incredible to see our hitters gain confidence and become more and more aggressive with every attempt they get. I love the way this tournament is going and cannot wait for tomorrow when we get to compete again for the championship."

Volleyball is now 18-17 on the season and will be playing at 8 AM MST on Dec. 4th for their last pool play game against Southern Wesleyan University. This match will be followed by the semi-finals that night with times to be determined.
