The Lady Cougars were defeated their second day on the road by Western State Colorado in four sets. After a tough match the night before vs Colorado Mesa (loss in five sets), the Cougars had to travel from Grand Junction, CO to Gunnison, CO and compete against the #9 team in the RMAC.
Â
The Mountaineers had a good night on their home court, playing resilient volleyball vs Colorado Christian. WSCU had three hitters that were unstoppable at the net. Outside hitter #16 Jordan Eatwell had 21 kills, middle hitter #27 Molly Hothan had 20, and outside hitter #2 Tori Gaherty totaled 13. Western hit .277% as a team.
Â
CCU's game was just off, especially on the right side defensively. Western State's outside hitters capitalized on the weakness, and scored over and over again, using the block and seam of the court. Despite the pounding, CCU senior #3
Taylor Sturms was consistent at the net having 14 kills off 50 attempts, hitting .240%. Sturms also passed a perfect game receiving 18 balls.
Â
CCU lost the first two sets 19-25 and 23-25, but then came back in set three winning 25-21. It looked as though the momentum was swinging towards blue and gold, but then in set four the Cougs came out flat, losing 15-25.
Â
Cougar Volleyball is now 6-4 in conference play and 14-7 overall, taking fifth place in the RMAC rankings. Colorado Christian will face another travel weekend Oct. 21-22 playing UCCS and Metro State.
