Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Senior Day Spoiled in Final Seconds

The Cougars took to their home field on Sunday afternoon as they faced off against Adams State. The Grizzlies stunned CCU in double overtime as they scored the game winning goal in double overtime to beat Colorado Christian by a final score of 3-2. The goal came with just .4 seconds left on the clock.

It was senior day for the Cougars, as the team honored the five seniors on the team prior to the start of the game. Brandon Eide, Nathan Garner, Andrew Sill, Quaid Theander, and Sam Walbearer were joined on the field by their families on the field for the festivities. Head coach Gary Evans spoke very highly of the group, and wished them nothing but the best in their future endeavors as he said, "We have been Blessed to have each and every one of the Seniors involved in the Cougar program over the years, and we pray that their years beyond CCU are inspiring and fruitful while they pursuing God's purpose."

Christian came out of the gates with an intense offensive attack as they had three good scoring chances within the first ten minutes of the first half. Even though they were unable to capitalize on those chances, they set the tone early that they were a force to be reckoned with. The defense also was playing with an edge, as they prevented Adams State from doing anything on offense for the majority of the first half. CCU got the break they needed in the 37th minute when an Adams State defender fouled Joe Wilkes inside the box as Wilkes was breaking towards the goal. The foul gave the Cougs a penalty kick, which was taken by Blake Goodale. Goodale took advantage of the opportunity as he found the back of the net for his sixth goal of the season. CCU held onto the lead for the rest of the first half, so heading into the break, the Cougs had a 1-0 lead.

Coming out of the break, both teams continued to fight hard. The Cougar defense remained strong at the open, but the Grizzlies broke through in the 63rd minute and scored to tie the game up 1-1. Eleven minutes later, Adams State found the back of the net again and took the lead for the first time in the game. CCU had a quick answer, as they tied the game up just minutes after Adams took the lead. Christian Redin beat the Grizzlies defense as he took a pass from teammate Blake Goodale, and shot it past the outstretched hands of the ASU keeper. It was the first goal of the season for Redin, and also the first assist on the year for Goodale. Neither team was able to break the tie in regulation, so the game headed into overtime.

In the first overtime, CCU had a breakaway attempt in the 94th minute as Jacoby Bly had an opportunity to win the game. Bly sent a shot towards the goal, but it went just left of the net. Adams State had a chance as well late in the first overtime, but it was denied by keeper Brandon Eide.

In the second overtime period, the Grizzlies went on the offensive as they fired multiple shot attempts, but Eide remained strong in net as he thwarted each attempt. In the last minute, Christian Redin rifled a shot on goal, but the Grizzlies keeper made the save. Disaster struck with ten seconds left in the game. ASU cleared the ball out of their zone as the defense passed it up the field. With time ticking away, the Grizzlies made one last attempt as they had two guys breaking towards the goal. A great pass gave Adams State a clear shot on goal as he shot it with two seconds left on the clock. The ball just got by Eide, and found the back of the net with just .4 seconds left on the clock to give Adams the miraculous victory over CCU 3-2.

The heartbreaking loss drops the Cougars record to 1-13 on the year, and 1-9 in conference play. The team will be back in action next weekend, as they hit the road for a pair of conference games. They face off against Fort Lewis on Friday Oct. 21 in Durango, CO. The game will begin at 3PM MST.
