Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Women's Soccer Ties UCCS

Women's soccer was on the road Sunday afternoon, as they took on the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs. Both teams battled hard, but neither team was able to break the tie in overtime, so the game ended as a 3-3 draw. This marks the third consecutive draw for CCU, as their record now sits at 5-6-3 overall, and 2-4-3 in conference play.

The Cougars began the game with a defensive mindset, as they held the Mountain Lions to just two shot attempts in the half. CCU had six shots in the half, but were unable to get on the board so heading into the break the score remained deadlocked in a 0-0 tie.

Each team made offensive adjustments during the break, and that was reflected early in the second half as CCU was able to take the lead in the 53rd minute. The goal came off of a header from Mollie Monson as she took advantage of a perfect pass from teammate Alyssa Regalado. It was the fourth goal of the season for Monson, and first assist for Regalado. Just five minutes later, the Cougars added to their lead thanks to Mariah Fredericks who was able to score after taking a pass from Lauren Cardoza on a corner kick.

UCCS had a loud answer, as they scored goals in the 68th, 75th, and 83rd minutes, which gave them a 3-2 lead with just seven minutes remaining. The Mountain Lions did not hold the lead for long, as Mariah Fredericks scored her second goal of the game in the 85th minute, which knotted up the score 3-3. Assisting on the play was Sarah Feller. It was the team leading fifth goal of the season for Fredericks. Neither team could score in the final minutes of regulation, so the game headed into overtime.

In the first overtime, both defenses tightened up as each team only had one shot in the ten minute period. CCU's best opportunity came early in the second overtime, when Alyssa Regalado sent a shot towards the goal, but it hit the crossbar and bounced away. Nobody was able to find the back of the net, so the game finished as a draw.

Head coach Tammy McPherson spoke about her team's performance after the game saying, "Mariah had a great game! Her stamina is amazing and her hunger for the goal makes her one of our most impactful players. As a team, we fought hard and our attack game was creative. I am proud of our girls for playing in their third consecutive double overtime game, and also scoring three goals. We just need to clean it up a bit throughout the middle and defensive third once we lose possession."

The Cougars will be back in action next weekend, as they return home to face off against Black Hills State University. That game will be senior day for the Cougars, as they honor the seniors in the program for their hard work and dedication both on, and off of the field. The game will be on Friday Oct. 21, and will begin at 12PM MST.
