Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Lone Goal Lifts CCU Past Adams

Women's soccer traveled to Alamosa, CO on Friday afternoon to square off against Adams State University. In a defensive game, the Cougars broke a scoreless tie late in the second half, which put them up for good as they went on to win by a final score of 1-0. Alyssa Regalado remained on fire, as she scored the only goal of the game.

The defense on each side set the tone during the first half. The suffocating pressure kept both offenses off balance as neither team was able to get anything going. Adams State had three shots in the first half, and the Cougars only had two. Heading into the break, the score remained deadlocked 0-0.

In the second half, the strong defensive play continued, as neither side was showing any weakness that the other side could expose. Finally, in the 73rd minute of the game, CCU was able to break free with a scoring chance. Alyssa Regalado capitalized, as she shot it past the ASU keeper, which gave the Cougs a 1-0 lead with just 17 minutes remaining. It marked the seventh goal of the season for Regalado, and her fourth goal in the last two games.

That goal was all senior keeper Shaya Lawrence needed. Lawrence was stellar again in net, as she earned her third shutout of the season. Lawrence had a clutch save late in the game after a CCU foul set Adams State up with a penalty kick just outside of the box. With just three minutes left, the Grizzlies fired a shot towards the left corner of the net. Lawrence made a diving save, which preserved the 1-0 victory for her team.

Head coach Tammy McPherson spoke after the game, "The ladies stepped up big time. They understood the seriousness of this match, they stayed focused all week in practice, and got it done today. At the end of the day, it's up to the players to get the job done, and that's exactly what they did!"

With the win, the Cougars record now sits at 7-6-3 overall, and 4-4-3 in conference play. They have one more game remaining in the regular season, as they will head to Durango, CO on Sunday afternoon to take on Fort Lewis College. The game will begin at 1PM MST.
