CCU Handed OT Loss

CCU faced off against Westminster College on the road on Friday afternoon. It was a hard fought match, but in the end, the Griffins edged the Cougars by a final score of 3-2 in overtime. The two goals scored for Christian ties a season high for a game.

Colorado Christian saw themselves in an early hole, as the Griffins scored the first goal just six minutes into the game. After the goal, both defenses settled into the game and held the offenses in check for the next 30 minutes of play. In the 36th minute, CCU netted the equalizer thanks to Blake Goodale and his team leading fourth goal of the season. Jack McCunn delivered a perfect pass into the box, and Goodale headed it home. It was the second assist of the season for McCunn. The game remained scoreless for the final nine minutes of the half, so heading into the break, the score remained tied 1-1.

As the second half started, both teams exchanged offensive chances, but had nothing to show for it. CCU grabbed the momentum, and the lead in the 70th minute after John Alderman found the back of the net. Sebastian Roeder assisted on the goal, as he flipped a pass into the box, and Alderman put it past the Westminster keeper. The Cougar defense tried to hold the lead for the remainder of the game, but in the 80th minute, the Griffins capitalized on a breakaway attempt, which tied the score 2-2 with only ten minutes left in regulation. Neither team was able to score in the final ten minutes, so the game headed into overtime.

Unfortunately for the Cougars, the overtime period lasted just over three minutes, as Westminster scored the early goal to defeat CCU. The goal came after a CCU foul set up a free kick deep in the Cougars zone.

The loss drops the Cougars record to 1-10 overall, and 1-6 in conference play. CCU remains on the road for the next contest on Sunday, as they travel to Grand Junction, CO to take on Colorado Mesa University. The game is scheduled to begin at 1PM MST.
