Colorado Christian traveled to Grand Junction on Sunday to take on Colorado Mesa. CCU jumped out to an early lead, but three second half goals from the Mavericks gave them the 3-1 victory over the Cougars.
Â
It was a fast start for the Cougs as they were able to jump out to an early 1-0 lead. In the 17
th minute, a pass from Eduard Shevchuck was centered into the box where
Blake Goodale was waiting and he perfectly placed a header just over the CMU Keeper. It was the fifth goal for Goodale, and the first assist on the year for Shevchuck.
Â
The Cougar defense made the 1-0 lead hold up for the remainder of the first half, as they played stellar defense which was able to negate the high powered Mavericks offense. CCU keeper
Brandon Eide notched eight saves in the first half, as Mesa fired 17 a total of 17 shots his way.
Â
Just under five minutes into the second half, Mesa was able to net the equalizer. The game remained a 1-1 tie until the 72
nd minute when CMU forward Roy Abergil scored to give the Mavericks a 2-1 lead. Abergil scored again in the 78
th minute, to pad their lead. CCU was unable to get anything in the final 12 minutes of the game against a stingy Mesa defense.
Â
The loss drops the Cougars record to 1-11-0, and 1-7-0 in conference play. CCU returns home next weekend as they will play two games at home in the friendly confines of Trailblazer Stadium in Lakewood. On Friday Oct. 14
th, Fort Lewis will be coming into town as the game starts at 12PM MST.
