Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

CCU Unable to Hold Early Lead

Colorado Christian Women's Soccer was defeated by Colorado Mesa University Friday afternoon 2-1 at Trailblazer Stadium. The Lady Cougs opened up the first half with a driving force of energy and control that was unstoppable, and also resulting in the first goal of the game.

The Cougs scored 17 minutes into the game by sophomore #17 Mollie Monson. Monson stands at 5'10", which is significantly taller than those on the field and a huge advantage for the Cougars offensive line. After a whirlwind of blue and gold possession and two shots on goal in the fifth and sixth minutes, CCU was dealt the first corner kick of the game.

#21 Lauren Cardoza took the corner and after a frenzy with the Mavericks, freshman #6 Maddison Hogan booted the ball high in the sky at the 20 yard line where Monson stood tall. The Minnesota native headed the ball towards CMU's goal. It was slow to land, but when it did, it fell high right into the Maverick's net. Maddison Hogan was awarded the assist, her first of the season, and Monson scored her third goal of year. The Cougars were up 1-0 with thirty minutes left in the half.

It wasn't long after the first goal of the game that opportunities arose for the Mavericks, and CCU's momentum fizzled out. Colorado Mesa ended the first half with seven shots (six of them being after CCU's goal), and the Cougs totaled three.

The second half was consistent with the way the first ended. CMU controlled the game, and tied it up with Christian in the 51st minute. Then they scored their game winning goal in the 58th minute. The score was 2-1. The Mavericks totaled 17 shots in the game, 10 being on goal. CCU had seven shots, with three being on goal.

Head Coach Tammy McPherson remarked:
"Our girls started off strong today with an early goal, but lost some composure after that, which gave Mesa some momentum. We fought hard toward the end of the second half but waited too long to find our composure again. However, I am confident the players will dig in and come out hard against Westminster on Sunday."
