Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

First Tie of the Season for Women's Soccer

CCU Women's Soccer had their first tie of the season vs the Westminster Griffins. The score was 1-1 after 110 minutes of play. The Cougars overall season record is now 5-6-1, and 2-3-1 in the RMAC.

Colorado Christian and Westminster were so equally matched that there were only two shots in the first half. One by the Cougars and then one by the Griffins. Defense was solid on both sides of the field, and there was constant trading of possession between the two squads.  It wasn't until the second half that there was some action in the game.

CCU earned a corner kick in the 49th minute, and once again #21 Lauren Cardoza took the ball. Cardoza booted the ball into the box, where it rebounded off a Griffin defender. The ball rolled right into #11 Mariah Fredericks possession where she flexed a low, fast shot into the lower left corner of the net. CCU had the first point on the board 1-0.

CCU battled and battled throughout the second half, but in the 64th minute, the Griffins equalized the game 1-1 with a goal by #23 Madison Roemer, her eighth this season. It was a shot from the top of the box that went hard into the lower left corner of CCU's goal.

The game would go on into double overtime, but neither team would see the victory. It was an incredible defensive game for the Cougars who faced a total of 18 shots by the Griffins, nine of which CCU goalie #00 Shaya Lawrence was able to save. Lawrence made some of the most athletic saves vs Westminster. There were balls deflecting off her hands, feet, body, etc. Along with Lawrence, #10 Kennady McCullough and #17 Mollie Monson were composed on defense winning a majority of the 50-50 balls in the middle.

Head Coach Tammy McPherson summarized the game as being one they are proud to walk away from. The team did everything they could, and worked hard to be confident and work though the struggles. They mixed up positions, and saw some great results from players like #6 Maddison Hogan and #18 Karli Wilson.

CCU Women's Soccer will be traveling to Western State Colorado University on Oct. 14th. Kick-off is set for 3:00 PM MST.
