Cougars Bounce Back for the Win

Cougar Volleyball is the unstoppable squad in the RMAC recording their seventh consecutive win vs Fort Lewis College putting them at 14-5 overall and 6-2 in conference.

CCU Volleyball played their match against the Skyhawks at 2 PM on Saturday afternoon, which was a quick turn around after Friday night's game vs Adams State. This could have been one of the reasons the Cougars had a very sluggish start losing sets one and two.

The first two sets were ultimately a blue and gold meltdown. Offensively, CCU hit poorly totaling 27 kills and 20 errors in two sets. There were no blocks in the first and then only two in the second. The Skyhawks had a very strong block throughout the entire match, but in set two they dominated on defense with six total team blocks, causing the Cougars to hit a .032%.

This kind of play for the Cougars was very un-character like, and in order to make a come-back, CCU would have to dig deep and find a way to score points. After set two, the Lady Cougs went into the locker room and when they came out you could already feel the change in the atmosphere. Slowly, CCU hitters started getting kills instead of being stuffed, and then serving got stronger. Christian's defense became relentless, but most of all the Cougar block was revitalized.

CCU would go on to win the next three sets snatching the win right out of the Skyhawks hands.

Overall Colorado Christian hit .147%, with 62 kills, 105 digs, and 15 team blocks. #5 Sophia Proano had the team high of 18 kills. Outside hitter #3 Taylor Sturms played one of her strongest games all season with 15 kills, 17 digs, and two blocks. #10 middle hitter Hope Baldrica had nine blocks, and #16 Angela Jurek, the M2 totaled six blocks, three of them being solos. Libero #17 was busy in the back making 26 digs, five assists, and one ace.

Kylee Wurster, CCU's setter hit .385% with six kills of her own in the front row and 21 digs in the back row. Wurster summed 47 assists.

Head Coach Andria Harshman stated after the game:

"This was a great battle for us to overcome! Fort Lewis had great floor defense and kept the ball in system very well. They just kept plugging away until they wear you down. We figured out how to execute better in between sets two and three and responded accordingly."

Colorado Christian Volleyball will be on the road the next two weekends starting with Colorado Mesa University on October 14th.
