CCU Uses Their Heads to Advance

A header by Sam Walbearer late in the first overtime found the back of the net and propelled them into the semi-finals of the NCCAA Regional tournament. The Cougars were taking on Southwestern Assemblies of God University in the tournament, and the goal by Walbearer gave Colorado Christian the 1-0 victory.

The first half was an even battle as both teams came out ready to play. The best scoring chance of the game came in the 16th minute when a penalty inside the box gave CCU a golden opportunity in the form of a penalty kick. Blake Goodale, the team's leading scorer, took the penalty kick. Goodale fired a shot towards the net, but a diving save prevented the Cougars from jumping out to an early lead. Sam Walbearer alertly collected the rebound and sent another shot towards the SAGU keeper. Unfortunately for Colorado Christian, the save was made, and the game remained tied 0-0. Both teams had six shots in the first half, but the game remained scoreless heading into halftime.

Coming out of the break, CCU ramped up their offensive attack. In the half, they fired 12 shots towards the SAGU net, but just like in the first half, they were unable to get anything past the Lions keeper. The Christian defense also tightened up, as they only allowed five shots in the second half. Senior keeper Brandon Eide made two great saves in the second half to preserve the tie score. At the end of regulation, the game remained tied 0-0, so they headed into overtime.

In overtime, the Cougars dominated possession of the ball which was evidenced by the 5-2 shot advantage. With just over a minute left in the first overtime, the Cougs drew a foul just outside of the box setting up a free kick. Nic Snyder took the free kick and passed the ball into the box near the goal. Sam Walbearer won the battle with a SAGU defender and was able to head the pass into the back of the net to seal the Colorado Christian victory. It was the first goal of the season for Walbearer, and the first assist for Snyder.

The Overtime victory advances the Cougars into the semi-finals of the NCCAA Regional tournament which they are hosting. They will have a quick turnaround for their next game, as they are set to take on Southwestern Christian University at 1PM MST on Thursday. The game will take place at Trailblazer Stadium in Lakewood.
