Cougars Advance to NCCAA Regional Finals

Colorado Christian began play in the NCCAA Regional tournament on Wednesday afternoon as they took on Central Christian College. The Cougars came out on top, as they scored the only goal in the game in the second overtime to defeat the Tigers 1-0. CCU dominated possession throughout the majority of the game, and were finally able to get one in the back of the net thanks to a perfectly placed pass off of a corner kick.

It was an uneventful first half as both defenses were able to limit the opposition. CCU outshot the Tigers 8-1 in the half. Senior Shaya Lawrence was in net for the Cougs in the game, and was able to add to the team's current streak of not allowing a goal. The team has now gone five consecutive games without allowing a goal, and their only loss came in penalties against Regis in the first round of the RMAC tournament.

The defense continued their stellar play in the second half, and the offense also began to pick up their pace. The best scoring chance in regulation time came in the 68th minute when Sarah Butler sent a pass into the box where Alyssa Regalado was waiting. Regalado sent a shot towards the net, but it sailed just high and out of play. Neither team was able to break into the scoring column in the final 21 minutes of play, so the game headed into overtime.

The first overtime period went just as the regulation time. Suffocating defense continued to thwart any offensive attack as the two teams combined for just three shots in the ten minute. Just one minute into the second overtime period, the Cougars caught a break as they earned a corner kick. Alyssa Regalado took the corner kick and sent a pass sailing into the box where Mariah Fredericks was waiting and headed it home for the game winner. For Fredericks, it was her team leading ninth goal of the year, and the fourth assist for Regalado.

With the win, CCU earned their way into the NCCAA Regional Championship game which will be played on Friday Nov. 18th. The game will be hosted by the Cougars as it will be played at Trailblazer Stadium in Lakewood. The championship match will begin at 1PM MST, as they will be taking on #1 seed Oklahoma Baptist.
