CCU faced off against Oklahoma Baptist University on Friday afternoon to determine who would be crowned the NCCAA Regional Champion. The Cougars got off to a fast start, but OBU stormed back and eventually won the game by a final score of 2-1. It wasn't the storybook ending that the team was hoping for, but they had a great season, finishing 9-8-3, and opened many eyes along the way.
Â
On a cold and windy day, the Cougs didn't have any trouble getting things going. Christian dominated possession of the ball in the first half, as they were able to control the ball and had several scoring chances early. CCU nearly capitalized in the 14
th minute when
Alyssa Regalado took a pass inside the box, and took a shot that headed for the goal. Unfortunately, the defender stuck her foot out and caught enough of the ball to send it just above the goal. The first half remained tied 0-0 until the 35
th minute when Regalado got another chance inside the box. This time she sent the ball to the back of the net and gave CCU the 1-0 lead. It was the eighth goal of the year for Regalado, and assisting on the play was freshman
Sarah Feller, as she collected her third assist of the season. The Cougar defense was able to hold off the Bison attack for the rest of the half, so the Cougs took a 1-0 lead into the break.
Â
Coming out of halftime, OBU did everything they could to even up the score. In the 55
th minute, their efforts were rewarded as they netted the equalizer to tie the game up 1-1. CCU went back on the offensive attack, but were unable to get anything else past the OBU keeper who was fantastic in the game. With two minutes left in regulation the game was still tied and it looked to be heading into overtime, but a penalty was called on CCU inside of their own box which set up the Bison with a penalty kick and a chance to steal the game. Oklahoma Baptist converted on the PK, and took the lead. CCU tried to answer back, but there was not enough time left and OBU held on for the 2-1 victory and took home the NCCAA Regional title.
