Five Set Battle Victory For Volleyball

Colorado Christian Volleyball defeated the #2 Colorado School of Mines in five sets to put the Cougs in the #4 spot and in the running to host the first round of RMAC playoffs.

Defeating Mines was a huge accomplishment for Colorado Christian, especially being down 2-0 and digging deep to win the next three sets. Not only did the Cougs win the last three sets, but they played amazing volleyball to do it. The first two sets were neck and neck betwenn the Cougs and Orediggers, but CCU really stepped up and created a gap in sets three and four. The fifth was right back to being a toss up going into extra points as CCU won 16-14.

The stars aligned in the front row as Taylor Sturms, Sophia Proano, and Aubrey Parker dominated on offense. All three athletes had one of their best games all season. Outside Hitter #3 Sturms had a season high of 20 kills off 47 attempts and 10 digs. Middle Hitter #8 Parker had 11 kills off 19 attempts and four blocks. Opposite #5 Proano had a team high of 21 kills off 37 attempts. The Cougars hit a .278% while Colorado Mines hit .206.

Ultimately blue and gold won the game from this smash ball offense, but their entire game was on point. Setter #18 Kylee Wurster also had a season high in her trade with 63 assists. The sophomore from Lincoln, NE made no ball handling errors and had seven digs in the back row.

CCU's defense was about as strong as their offense in this match. Four cougars had 10 digs or over with libero #17 Mariela Gonzalez leading the pack with 21 digs. #7 defensive specialist Joelle LeFevre made an impression on the court making 16 digs, and CCU's middle blockers Hope Baldrica and Aubrey Parker both had four blocks.

The Orediggers still hold second place in the RMAC with a record of 14-3, and the Cougs are in the four spot with a record of 11-6. In order to host the first round of playoffs CCU must win their last conference game against Chadron State and UCCS would have to lose to Black Hills State.
