Cougars Earn Victory Over Roadrunners

Colorado Christian took to the court on Saturday night to take on Metro State in the final game before entering the Christmas break. Five Cougars finished the game in double figures, as the balanced attack netted CCU the victory over the Roadrunners by a final score of 87-75. This marks the first win against the Roadrunners since February 12, 2010, and the first road win by CCU at Metro since March 6th, 1993.

After spotting Metro an early 4-0 lead, CCU found their rhythm on the offensive side of the ball and quickly erased the deficit by scoring the next six points to take a 6-4 lead. Both teams continued to battle, and at the halfway mark of the first half, CCU had extended their lead to six points, as they were up 18-12. The Cougs went ice cold from the floor over the course of the next five minutes, which allowed MSUD to take advantage. Metro rattled off a 12-1 run to give them a 24-19 lead with five minutes left in the half. Christian regained their composure, and battled back. They evened things up, and were eventually able to get back in front, as they took a six point lead heading into halftime 35-29.

In the second half, both teams were able to open things up on the offensive end. The Cougar lead remained six after five minutes of play, then Christian began to pull away thanks to their efforts beyond the three point line. CCU extended their lead to double digits with a little over ten minutes left, and remained in control throughout the remainder of the game. CCU separated themselves by shooting 7-10 (70%) from downtown in the half, compared to the Roadrunners hitting just 4-16 (25%). The Cougars were able to remain hot in the second half, which helped them to seal the victory by a final score of 87-75.

Head coach Kevin Lubbers spoke after the game saying, "Our guys played a very complete game tonight. 18 assists to only eight turnovers is a very good stat line for us as a group against an excellent defensive team. We had great contributions from a variety of guys in the game. This was a great way for us to move into the break."

As a team, CCU finished the game shooting 48% (29-60), and 57% (13-23) from beyond the arc. Defensively they were able to hold Metro State to shooting 39% (24-61) from the floor, and 27% (7-26) from three. The Cougs forced 14 turnovers, which led to 22 points on the offensive end.

Five players finished the game in double figures, led by Brett Brady who had 19. Brady hit on 7-11 shots, including 3-5 from deep. Andre Lane stuck performed well against his former team as he finished with a season high 17 points, shooting 6-11 from the floor and 5-8 from three. Jeremiah Hanson also finished with a season high 16 points, as he provided a park off of the bench hitting on 5-8 shots, and all four of his attempts at the charity stripe. Dimitri Saliba picked up his second double-double of the year as he finished with 14 points and ten rebounds. Saliba also led the team with six assists. Rounding out the CCU top performers was Jacob Taylor. Taylor was one rebound shy of a double-double as he had 13 points and grabbed nine rebounds.

With the win, the Cougars record now sits at 8-4 overall, and 5-1 in conference play. Their next game action comes on December 30th when they will have a home contest against Adams State University. The game will be at the CCU Event Center in Lakewood, and will begin at 7PM MST.
