The Cougars took to the field on Sunday afternoon as they took on University of Colorado-Colorado Springs. UCCS scored two goals in just over a minute late in the second half to hand Colorado Christian the loss by a final score of 2-0.
Â
CCU played a strong first half as they dominated the possession on the offensive end, and coupled that with a great effort on the defensive end.
Brandon Eide stifled the Mountain Lions best scoring chance of the half when he made a save on a breakaway attempt, then collected another save when a UCCS player tried to score off of the rebound.
Joe Wilkes made a nice defensive play, as he cleared the ball and prevented a third shot.
Â
The Cougars best scoring chance came late in the first half off of a free kick from 30 yards out.
Jack McCunn took the kick and sent a shot towards the net. It was heading just past the reach of the Mountain Lions keeper, but sailed just high and over the net. Neither team was able to get on the scoreboard, so it headed into halftime still tied 0-0.
Â
As the second half began, the momentum began to shift in favor of UCCS, as they started to apply more pressure on the offensive side of the ball. However, the CCU defense remained stout, as they continued to hold the scoreless. Unfortunately, the Mountain Lions finally broke through in the 83
rd minute, as they netted the first goal of the game thanks to a perfectly placed strike from 20 yards out. Just a little over a minute later, the Mountain Lions found the back of the net again to take a commanding 2-0 lead with just over five minutes remaining in the game. The Cougars could not bounce back, and ended up losing the game by two.
Â
With the loss, the Cougars are now 1-7 on the year, and 1-3 in conference play. They will be back in action on Friday Sep. 30
th, as they will take on Regis University at Trailblazer Stadium in Lakewood, CO. The game will start at 11AM MST.
