CCU took to the field on Friday afternoon looking for another conference victory, but ran into a road block in CSU-Pueblo. After remaining scoreless throughout the entire regulation, the game headed into overtime still tied 0-0. The Thunderwolves scored the game winner just over four minutes into extra time, which handed the Cougars a 1-0 loss.
Â
The Cougars started the game off strong, highlighted by the strong defensive play from
Kennady McCullough,
Maddison Hogan, and
Meghan Troupe. Every attack CSUP was thwarted by the defense, as they were able to hold them to just two shots in the first half. On the offensive end, the Cougs had two good scoring chances in the first half. The first came in the 27
th minute when
Mariah Fredericks sent a shot towards the net, but it sailed just high. The next chance came in the 42
nd minute, when
Kielli Jordan corralled the ball in the box and sent a shot screaming towards the goal. Unfortunately, the Thunderwolves keeper made the save, and preserved the 0-0 tie heading into the break.
Â
In the second half, CSUP began to look for more ways to incorporate their offense. They outshot the Cougs 7-2 in the second half. Despite the increased attack, the Christian defense remained strong. Neither team was able to break the tie at the end of regulation, so the game headed into overtime.
Â
The Thunderwolves were able to get the game winning goal just over four minutes into the first overtime. After a shot was blocked by the CCU defense, CSUP attacker Kacie Licata collected the rebound and was able to send a shot into the back of the net, just past the outstretched hands of CCU keeper
Shaya Lawrence.
Â
With the loss, the Cougars record now sits at 5-4-0 overall, and 2-2 in conference play. They will be back in action on Sunday Oct. 2
nd when they will face off against New Mexico Highlands. The game will be in Las Vegas, NM and will begin at 1PM MST. Â
