Game Recap: Women's Soccer | | Daniel J Cook

Cowgirls OT Goal Clips Cougars

The CCU women's soccer team took on the Cowgirls from New Mexico Highlands University on Sunday, October 1, at Trailblazer Stadium. The Cougars were looking to build on an impressive tie with CSU – Pueblo a few days prior that brought their record to 3-5-1 (0-3-1), while the Cowgirls were hoping to bounce back from a 4-0 loss against Colorado School of Mines that brought their season record to 1-4-2 (1-1-1). It took overtime, but ultimately the Cowgirls would prevail over the Cougars 2-1.

The first half saw freshman goalie Ireland VanDyke make her second start in a row. The first half ended 0-0 through the first half, however CCU had outshot NMHU 9-3. The Cougars were just unable to finish any of the attempts despite the lopsided line.

Ten minutes into the second half Highlands pressed the action and won themselves a penalty kick after CCU was called for a foul inside the 18-yard box. Even though she has allowed two goals from penalty shots this season, VanDyke has played PK's very well this season, somehow managing to guess the right direction each time, but the shot would angle just out of reach. The same would happen Sunday, VanDyke dove to her right as the ball was heading the same place, but would roll just out of her reach to be saved, putting the Cowgirls up 1-0.

The Cougars would even the score in the 86th minute when senior Sheridan Spelman gained control of the ball after a brief struggle near midfield, dribbled straight into the 18-yard box, and ripped the ball as the NMHU goalie came off her line, unable to adjust to the shot. The Cougars would have one more try in the final 30 seconds of the half when they set up for a corner kick that ultimately ended up out of bounds as the horn sounded.

It didn't take long in overtime for the Cowgirls to score and claim victory. In just the fourth minute of overtime NMHU started their push from a free kick on their own half of the field which eventually found its way up the field, into the 18-yard box, and past VanDyke for the game winner.

The loss brings CCU's season record to 3-6-1 and 0-4-1 in RMAC matches. The Cougars will be on the road for the next few games, including their next game when they travel to Grand Junction, CO, to take on the Mavericks of Colorado Mesa University.
