For the first time in four years (2013) CCU Volleyball defeated Colorado Mesa University in four sets. From what started as a fierce competition between CCU and CMU ended in total domination by the Lady Cougs. Christian won the first set by a hair 25-23, lost the second 20-25, took a solid win in the third 25-18, and then absolutely put on a show in the fourth winning 25-7.
Christian had a rocky start in the first set trailing behind the Mavericks 0-5, but was able to slowly chip away gaining the lead at 8-7. The rest of the set was point-for-point between the two squads. The Cougs were down in blocks and on the service line, but up in kills and digs. CCU won 25-23. Christian lost the second set doubling the Mavericks in errors. CMU played well and brought the heat at the net with their kills and blocks. CCU hitters were desperately trying to find the holes in the block, but couldn't get around it hitting only a .070%. Mesa won the second set 25-20.
The third set was similar to the first. Both teams were challenging each other on defense and offense. The Cougs defense looked the sharpest it has all season long. Libero
Mariela Gonzalez led in digs at the end of the four sets with a career high of 35. Nothing was hitting the Cougars floor, and then the front row started to feed off the momentum. Middle hitters
Jasa Scheierman and
Hope Baldrica were unstoppable in their blocking in the third set and the Cougs offense ignited. Mesa could not find a rhythm and struggled to score points. CCU won the fourth set 25-18.
The fourth set was hands down Colorado Christian's best set thus far this season as they won 25-7. The Cougs hit a .458% with 13 kills and only two errors off 24 attempts and 11 total blocks (compared to Mesa's seven). It was an amazing team effort by CCU. Every hitter stepped up their game and scored big points, including setter
Kylee Wurster who had five kills at .333%. Outside hitter
Cali Bahnsen hit .429% with six kills, no errors.
Jasa Scheierman had 10 kills at .208 and six blocks.
Sophia Proano had a game high of 11 kills and five blocks. But leading the Cougars at the net was
Hope Baldrica with nine kills, no errors at .450% and five blocks.
The home crowd was impressed in tonight's match as the Cougars seven game winning streak advanced their record to 8-1 in conference. CCU is hoping to get another win on Saturday, Oct. 13
th vs Western State Colorado 5:00 PM at the CCU Event Center.
