Cougars Fall in 2OT Heartbreaker

CCU Men's Soccer took to their home field for the second time this weekend, kicking off at 2:30pm against the Mountain Lions of UCCS. After another 2OT game, the Cougars fell after a good fight to the Mountain Lions 2-1.

The first goal was made by CCU freshman Zion Lander, scoring his first goal of the season to put the Cougars on the board in the 11th minute. After a breakaway, Lander shot from the left side into the top right corner to score unassisted after beating out the defender.

UCCS got up ten shots in the first half, but was unable to find the back of the net. CCU got up four, and went into halftime leading 1-0.

The Mountain Lions came out strong in the second half, and scored off of a header set up perfectly from a corner kick within the first ten minutes. The goal equalized the score 1-1. UCCS continued to keep the pressure on, and got up nineteen shots in the second half to the Cougars four. Both teams were unable to score again in the second half, taking the score going into overtime 1-1.

Both teams were unable to score in the first overtime, UCCS taking three shots and CCU taking two.

Five minutes into the second overtime, the leading scorer for the Mountain Lions scored to take the win with a final score of 2-1.

UCCS dealt three yellow cards and nineteen fouls, and CCU dealt one yellow card and sixteen fouls. Freshman goalkeeper Will Ford had seven saves.

The loss puts the Cougars at 1-7-2 in conference, and 1-10-3 overall. CCU will travel to Grand Junction for their next game on October 20th, at 4pm.
